Curls are the first thing that come to mind when I remember my afternoon with this little one. I have a soft spot in my heart for curly headed little ones since I have a little guy with ringlets myself. I just love them! I had the best morning today. Ok outside of needing gas at the last minute in my car and forgetting my memory card (I stopped at Best Buy on the way there!) it was a great morning. I have been waiting to share this awesome news for a while now until I had the portraits up and the images to show everyone! I am proud to be partnering with The Baby Bump Motherhood Center, an awesome 3D/4D sonogram facility and more! Last night was our first night of mini maternity sessions so I was able to get a few quick images of the display to share as well. It looks so good and I have to admit I was grinning from ear to ear when I saw it.

I had the great pleasure to hang out with 5 adults yesterday to do some family portraits for them. You all know I LOVE working with children (obviously) but I have to say yesterdays session was a nice break from my norm and I had a blast. I really wish that more families with children who have all grown up would set aside the time for portraits of their family just like this. It really is a great to have images of your kids when they are all grown up too, not just when they have that adorable baby fat!

If there is anything that I am an expert in - it is little boys. Lord knows having three of my own I am never surprised by them anymore. "T" was not in the mood for me but unfortunately for him, I couldn't resist his sweet brown eyes and these cheeks! So I pulled out all the stops and of course walked away with beautiful images to show Mom & Dad. I had a lovely time photographing him! Gallery is coming soon!

This sweet girl has got to be the happiest, most easy going baby EVER. For an hour today she just smiled and smiled even when we were done and wanted just one more, she found a way to oblige. I can't believe she is already a year old, I just adore her (and her family!). I am looking forward to many more years watching her and her sister grow up. So, here is a little then and now!

I can not wait for spring and I am sure you can't either! Luckily before we know it the snow will be melting, the flowers will be blooming and we will be playing outside again. Since I am dreaming of spring, I will be hosting a Spring Fling Mini Session Event. On April 29th I will be hosting mini sessions at Baby's Sweet Beginnings in Lancaster, NY.

Ok yeah, its Superbowl Sunday. More importantly though, it is this sweet little one's 1st Birthday! I know I say it a lot, but I really can't believe how much children change in one year. I was lucky enough to photograph her at just 4 days old. She was a blast to hang out with and photograph this weekend. We had many important conversations together in which I spoke and she nodded yes. What a doll!

I have had the absolute pleasure of photographing this family for almost 3 years now. We started with little A's brother and then she was welcomed into the family and now she is a year old! It is amazing how fast time flies. She is quite possibly the happiest and easiest one year old I have ever photographed. What a doll!

Olivia really wants "Biscuit, My Lovin Pup" and Alexis loves anything Barbie!

What gift are you most excited to give this year?
The gifts I bought for my daughters!

What is your family's favorite holiday tradition?
My mother is from Vienna, Austria so our big celebration takes place on Christmas Eve. We have a big dinner and open gifts with the whole family! It is really special, especially now that my sister and I have our own families. We love to see the joy in the kid's eyes when they see that Santa has come to bring them presents!
What store are most of your gifts coming from this holiday season? Either online or at the mall! Having two young children, most of my shopping was done at Toys R Us. I also did a lot of my grown-up shopping at Williams Sonoma.

What is your favorite holiday food?
I love Christmas Cookies!!! I also love all of the appetizers before the big Christmas meal!

How would you describe your holiday decorating style?
Our decorating style is influenced a lot by Pottery Barn, so we have quite a few holiday decorations from there. We also always put out a nativity scene to help us remember the true meaning of Christmas! And of course all of the holiday decorations made by my oldest daughter Olivia at school. We put them all out because she is very proud of her art!

What is the last book you read to your children?
"When You Bring a Mouse to School"

What is your favorite activity to do with your children in the winter?
Playing outside in the snow and going sledding at my grandmother's house in Jamestown, NY. She lives in the country, so she has great sledding hills! Afterwards, we go inside and warm up with a cup of hot cocoa. The girls love it!

What are your favorite websites or blogs to visit?
I love to look at the blog on SH portraits. I love seeing all of the beautiful babies and children! I also visit pottery barn, gymboree, gap, allrecipes.com and cnn regularly.

What local groups or causes are you involved with? Do you belong to or support any volunteer organizations?
I volunteer at my daughter's school and I also feel very passionately for St. Jude's Children's Hospital, so when they call and ask me for help with something, I always try to make some time.

What is something unique about your family?
We have many different ethnic backgrounds in my family! I am Austrian and Irish and my husband is Macedonian, so we celebrate many different traditions! Our children are very proud of their heritage and love to learn about the different celebrations!

What are your favorite 3-4 images from your session?
My first favorite image is of Olivia and Alexis standing together by the rocks. Lexi is holding onto the back of Olivia and when I first saw the picture, I saw for the first time the strong bond between them and the security that Alexis feels when Olivia is with her.

I also love the picture of Alexis sitting on the bench wearing the white dress. She wasn't very keen about being photographed at first and the look that she has, is very indicative of the look she gives people when she is unsure and somewhat suspicious of them.

Another favorite image I have is of Olivia bent down and smiling. Olivia is very chatty and happy! She loved being photographed and hanging out with Samara! So, the happy look on her face shows the joy that she has inside of her!

Last - what do you love most about SH Portraits? I had to add it! What I love most about SH portraits is that Samara doesn't just take a picture of your child she captures their nature, who they really are. When you see the photographs that Samara has taken of your children for the first time, it makes you want to cry because you aren't just looking at a picture of your child, you are seeing the true them and their inner spirit! I also love how relaxed Samara is during the session, it really helps the kids to feel uninhibited! And as an added bonus the SH Portraits website is very modern in design and user friendly, I just love it! Samara, you truly are a gifted artist! Thank you!

Project 365 - Kid Style

Project 365 is a popular project where people take a picture of themselves everday for an entire year. Well - I'm not really interested in pictures of myself, but I am of my kids! After realizing how little I documented my own family in 2008 I am doing a little twist on 365 and documenting one of my children everyday in 2009.

I have started a blog at www.shportraits365.blogspot.com where one photo will be posted everyday.

It will be of one of the kids, something they made, something that reminds me of them, something that they are "into" at that moment. Anything to document them and who they are growing up to be.

Well..she is kinda young to have a Christmas list..but..I am living vicariously through her so I got her a Fisher Price Sit N Spin pony, Little People Nativity Set, Little People Animal Sounds Barn, Little People Around Town, an art table and a My Little Pony.

What gift are you most excited to give this year?
The Little People Nativity set. We are hoping to start a tradition every year by putting it under the tree.

What is your family's favorite holiday tradition?
Going to cut down the tree every year. We always seem to go to the tree place..and something doesnt work out the first time we go. Last year we went to a co-worker of my husband's farm. We got there a little late (the place was in Cattaraugus County) and the guy was nowhere to be found. My husband got out of the car and started calling the guy's name. His friend was so mad because we were late and he thought we werent going to show up so he decided to deer hunt. Well of course the deer are going to scatter because here comes my husband shouting....the guy was just like pick a tree. Umm..needless to say I wasnt bringing my daughter who was 6 months old at the time out of the car while this guy was in some tree trying to look for deer! This year has been crazy so we got a late start. We went last week to get the tree and instead of cutting it down...I decided for the sake of time we would just buy a pre-cut one. We drove out to Adam's nursery since I could still get that "country feel" by doing a little driving. We got there at 7:30 and they were closed!!!!!!!!! Whateiver happened to places staying open late? Especially so close to Christmas!!! Next year will be different. I hope!

Putting our Christmas tree up the day after Thanksgiving...after some super early shopping, we spend the rest of the day putting the tree up and decorating.

We all have blue eyes...not sure how unique that is, but I think it is cool!

Nicholas (the one of him laying on the bed)- First thing I thought of when I saw it was "That Hair" it shows his curly soft hair and beautiful blue eyes.

Nathan (the close up of him smiling)- First thing I thought was "look how handsome he looks"...I love how it highlights his eyes and smile.
Nicholas (the one from the Christmas card)- He looks angelic to me in that photo...his eyes say so much and of course, "That Hair".

We got a later start in life than a lot of families that we know. We have had many trying times in the past three years but it is all worth it. We are a strong family who is very committed to each other and we are grateful for all of our friends and family.

Today was a sad day as I attened the funeral for little Jake Thomas, the sweet son of my friend Lori. I had the absolute pleasure and honor of photographing him when he was born and again with his parents and sister a few months later. Little Jake lost his battale to SMA on Sunday. The Mansion of Heaven

There are no pictures to attach to this post, just an amazing story. A few months ago my cousin Keith was paralyzed from the chest down after a motorcross accident. It was of course devestating to everyone, family & friends included. Keith was given an amazing gift this week from a man that was a stranger when he first heard about Keith's accident. I am so very proud of him and his determination to be well again!

She was SO good, 2 1/2 weeks old and she was sleeeeeeepy and just lovely. I don't know what else to say, she just takes your breath away doesn't she?! I was so happy to photograph her since I have known her family for about 2 years now when her older brother was born. I just love watching these families grow!

The Best Job!

Ok seriously, I have the best job. No really I do, don't argue with me. ;) I get to hang out with ADORABLE babies like this little one, who smile and think my big black camera is actually cool (unlike my kids!) and who have fun parents. So see, I do have the best job!

Well these kids have a very special Mom. . .she was my birth doula for Reid's birth. And as I am sure she can attest to, I wouldn't have been able to do it without her. Yeah my husband is great but honestly, he crumbles under pressure especially when that involves me being in pain. She spent just about 24 hours massaging my back, getting me into different positions, the list goes on. So I was so excited to visit with her and her beautiful children this weekend! We had a blast, lots of laughing, lots of leaf throwing and lots of smiles.

Toddling Around

The last time I was lucky enough to meet this little angel she was just a few days old. Today she surprised me with her smiling face toddling around the park. She was so cooperative (not all one year olds are especially the walking ones!). I had a lovely time with her, Mom & Grandparents. Do you just love her blue eyes! Ok everyone - at the last minute, I have decided to open up a couple of slots for two (and only two!) last minute mini sessions on Monday October 13th. These are the only ones that will be available this year!

Here is the scoop: $75 Mini Session fee includes 20 minutes of photography and 5-10 proofs. Your $75 fee is for 1 subject there is an additional charge of $25 for up to 2 more subjects. A $250 print purchase is required before custom holiday cards may be purchased BUT you will receive 15% off of your cards! You will also receive 2 mini brag books! The two open times are 4:30 and 5:00 so act fast!

Your session fee is due at the time of booking and is non refundable. If we must cancel due to inclement weather or otherwise and can not reschedule, your fee may be used towards a session between January-June of 2009.

Mom & I were saying a lot of that when we had a miscommunication on the day and then when I realized how much this little guy had changed! Luckily someone was on our side and I was able to stay and photograph him. I was expecting a full head of red hair and instead I was greeted with big blue eyes, blond hair and lots of smiles. Hey either way, it worked out great and he is such a doll!

Wow - when I posted my current fall schedule most everything was snapped up in just about one day. I am looking forward to meeting great new families and visiting with some previous clients! The following are the current open dates for the remainder of the year. I may open up a few more dates in December, but there will be no holiday delivery for those dates. I am also starting a waiting list for any October or November dates if you are interested in that let me know!

but it is all about having the camera handy! Only this morning when all three of my boys were seemingly in a great mood and in the right place at the right time - my camera was not. (of course!) But guess what was handy - no not my point and shoot camera either! My camera phone. Yup thats right folks, this was taken with my camera phone. Unfortunately because it was with a camera phone it isn't something I can ever print, but I can make it into wallpaper here on my computer!

I am often asked what is the best camera on the market right now, or can you help me learn how to use my camera. I will of course help when I can, but in the end folks it isn't about the camera you use, it is how you use it!

Hi everyone! I have put together a fall schedule for this year. Please keep in mind that my schedule is limited due to having a new baby. If you do not see a date that works for your family, please email me and we will see if we can work something out!

All sessions booked from now through the end of the year will require a $50 non refundable deposit. If your session must be cancelled, your deposit will go towards your session fee during the months of January 2009 - June 2009. All orders placed before November 20th, will arrive to you by December 1st. I can not guarantee that orders placed after November 20th will be here in time for the holidays, so be sure to book your sessions early!

Well the answer is I have been on maternity leave and I was waiting for this little guy to arrive. He made his entrance into the world on Saturday at 11:42am after a very long and eventful labor. He weighs 7 pounds and is 20 1/2 inches long. His name. . .Reid Patrick Lumley. So enjoy the only 2 pictures I have taken of him since returning home! No really, only 2 I'm exhausted! Oh - we call him Spike because we can give him a mohawk!

I began photographing this little one when she was just a few weeks old and now here she is 18 months old. Its been fun watching her grow since she is so close to my little guy Jude in age. They are few weeks apart from each other! She has a little sister that I am lucky enough to watch grow now too. Learning Curve

It is amazing how much children, especially babies change in one year. Just a year ago (on Sunday!) this little was born and a few days later I photographed her. She is the black and white picture where it says "Enter Blog!" on my website! Then she was a teeny tiny little thing, I believe a little less than 6 pounds. Now she is a spunky little one year old with gorgeous blue eyes and a mind of her own. I just loved this session and all of the lovely color. So for once I am posting no black and white images, just color because I love it so much. . .and I hope Mom does too!

Happy Mothers Day to everyone! For those clients and friends who are celebrating your very first Mother's Day, I hope you enjoy this day and all the many years of celebrating ahead. I will post a picture of me with my children and add it to this post later on. Right now I am still sipping my coffee, watching one of my kids eat breakfast, the other climbing on my husband, the third upstairs crying because his big sister isn't eating fast enough to go play with him and the last little one is kicking my laptop from inside the belly! So needless to say, now isn't a good picture taking time!

I thought it would also be fun to share the history of Mother's Day. I took this passage from www.widpedia.com. I'd love to hear how everyone celebrates their day today, so if you have a moment drop a line on the blog here!

The United States celebrates Mother's Day on the second Sunday in May. In the United States, Mother's Day was loosely inspired by the British day and was imported by social activist Julia Ward Howe after the American Civil War. However, it was intended as a call to unite women against war. In 1870, she wrote the Mother's Day Proclamation as a call for peace and disarmament. Howe failed in her attempt to get formal recognition of a Mother's Day for Peace. Her idea was influenced by Ann Jarvis, a young Appalachian homemaker who, starting in 1858, had attempted to improve sanitation through what she called Mothers' Work Days. She organized women throughout the Civil War to work for better sanitary conditions for both sides, and in 1868 she began work to reconcile Union and Confederate neighbors.
When Jarvis died in 1907, her daughter, named Anna Jarvis, started the crusade to found a memorial day for women. The first such Mother's Day was celebrated in Grafton, West Virginia, on 10 May 1908, in the church where the elder Ann Jarvis had taught Sunday School. Originally the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church, this building is now the International Mother's Day Shrine (a National Historic Landmark). From there, the custom caught on — spreading eventually to 45 states. The holiday was declared officially by some states beginning in 1912. A Little Man

It had been 6 months since I had a visit with this little guy. (I photographed him as a newborn too!) He couldn't possibly have gotten any sweeter! I love seeing how babies change from those first few days and trying to guess what their personality will be like, which parent they most resemble. I'd say his personality is great and he was very very tolerable of the big black camera in his face for quite some time! Even though his session is done and the gallery is up, I had to be sure to share him! He even has a cute sad face!

What is custom photography?

So many people have asked me in the past, why custom photography? what is custom photography? I have taken this excerpt from http://www.professionalchildphotographer.com written by photographer Marianne Drenthe to help answer these questions!

"The photographic art you choose to place on your wall is ultimately the result of the vision of the photographer. This vision, coupled with what you wear to your session, the environment, the lighting, even the mood the subjects are in at the time of photographing creates the work that you will want to proudly display on your walls forevermore.

Your first step in the process is more about determining who you are, who your family is and then seeking a photographer that reflects your style. For instance let’s say your family is extremely outdoorsy and loves playing on the beach. You start determining what style you like, browse through photography website portfolios and determine if any of the styles exhibited there would be a good fit with your life and family style. You have already determined that you should probably seek out a beach type photographer (that is if you live near a beach) and then begin narrowing the field down a bit.

Finally after a bit of internet research, you have narrowed it down to two photographers who do what seems like solid work, the sort of outdoor beach look you desire. It is now time to ask yourself: Do you like photographer A’s style over photographer B’s style? Is it because the people in the images of A’s style are having a great time and it seems very caught up in the moment vs. B photographer more posed, looking in the camera images? If this is a case, you probably like LIFESTYLE photography or perhaps even take it a step further and define your desired style as a PHOTOJOURNALISTIC photography style. The photographer you probably should choose is photographer A because their style is very similar to the style you desire.

What custom photography ultimately is all about is choice and experience (as in THE experience). Custom photography is about finding someone who will photograph your family, give you devoted 1:1 attention without worry of the next ‘in line’ or the feeling of a crowded portrait studio. A custom photographer will typically show you a fairly extensive gallery culled to only show the good images that meet the photographers’ creative sensibilities. Capture Your Miracle - Maternity Photography Event

SH Portraits is currently seeking pregnant woman between 32-36 weeks to take part in a special “Capture Your Miracle” event. This limited edition will showcase semi-nude artisitc photography of pregnant women. The sessions will take place in the clients home featuring the client’s decor with a relaxed & modern twist on
maternity photography.

Each woman will receive a complimentary session fee of $150. All prints must be purchased seperately at the a la carte rates or in a package. A purchase is not required to participate in the event. A special gift will be given to all women who book a
newborn session with SH Portraits at the time of their maternity session.

I can't wait to get started working in the New Year. New clients, new locations, fun, hugs, kisses - oh it is all just so much fun for me.

I will be offering a special promotion series with limited availability and dates in January and February to kick start the year.

So here's the deal - there are going to be 4 "themes". Each theme has limited availability as well as other restrictions (like location, number of subjects, ages of children) so if you have any questions, be sure to contact me! All sessions must take place by the end of February.

Theme One - "In your face!": $100 for session fee and includes a mini session album. This session will focus on up close portraits of your children. Make sure to have lots of hats, scarves and silly faces ready to go! Also please be prepared to venture outside for a few portraits. There will not be any black and white portraits available for this session, only fun bold, bright color! Child must be old at least 6 months old and able to sit on their own through age 7. Only one child per session. Session must take place within 20 miles of Buffalo, NY.

Theme Two - "Little Monkeys": $100 for session fee and includes a mini session album. This session will focus on your children being children! No posed portraits. All I want is your little monkeys jumping on the bed, playing with their toys, making crafts, baking cookies. Anything but a posed portrait. Child must be at least 2 years old, through age 7. Only one or two children per session. Session must take place within 20 miles of Buffalo, NY

Theme Three - "On the Town": $100 for session fee and includes a mini session album. This session will be outdoors in East Aurora NY. I love the old town feel of East Aurora, Fisher Price, the fun fire hydrants, toy shops. There will be candid and posed portraits of your child, with a modern outdoor on the town feel to them. Child must be at least 18 months old, through age 7. Only one child for this session. Session must take place in East Aurora.

Theme Four - "Fine Art Window Portrait": $100 for session fee and includes a mini session album. This session will be all black and white, moody, window light portraits of your child. I will also include some fine art black and white closeups of your child. Child must be old at least 6 months old and able to sit on their own, through age 7. Only one child for this session.

All portraits must be purchased seperately, although there is no obligation to purchase anything other than the $100 session fee. Mini session album is a 10 image wallet sized leather album, the client may pick the images for the album. All sessions will have a minimum of 10 images to view in their gallery.
